CME & CPE Learning Objectives
- To address the latest science, research, evidence and clinical approaches relating to prevention, diet, lifestyle and health
- To understand the metabolic and hormonal pathways regulating energy balance, food intake, hunger and weight. Why all macronutrients are not created equal
- To review the evidence and recommendations past and present in support, or not of the current dietary guidelines
- How to clinically address chronic metabolic diseases including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and aging using whole foods diets including Low Carb, Ketogenic, Paleo & Primal that compliment standard medical therapies. A comparison to more standard dietary approaches
- To understand the role of inflammation in chronic disease
- To learn about diet and health as it relates to athletic performance
- Clinical and non-clinical topics will have a direct bearing on patient care, a direct bearing on the healthcare professional’s ability to deliver patient care, and/or support the healthcare professional’s role in patient care
- Topics that are not necessarily evidence based but considered neither dangerous nor ineffective can be discussed. These presentations will be balanced (provide risks and benefits) and informational. Hypotheses, mechanisms and non-clinical research topics will include discussions relevant to patient care
- Presentations will be free of promotional content
- The presentations will comply with the updated AAFP Credit Eligibility Requirements
1. AAFP Credit System Eligibility Requirements:
- The CME activity must be relevant to the scope of family medicine and comply with the Prescribed or Elective credit definitions.
- PRESCRIBED: The CME activity must be primarily designed for physicians and have an AAFP Active or Life member directly involved in the planning of the activity to ensure the relevance of the content to the specialty of family medicine.
- ELECTIVE: The CME activity may be primarily designed for health care professionals other than physicians. Direct involvement of an AAFP Active or Life member in the planning of the activity is not required.
- The CME activity must fully comply with the ACCME Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education .
- The CME activity must:
- Be based on the educational needs of learners based on their professional practice gaps,
- Address one or more ACGME/ABMS core competencies,
- Engage learners in the education as appropriate, and
- Define and evaluate the learner’s achieved outcome level.
- The CME activity must be relevant to the scope of family medicine and comply with the Prescribed or Elective credit definitions.
- All topics must have learning objectives that state what the learner is intended to be able to do upon completion of the education.
- Clinical topics must be:
- Evidence-based and/or customary and generally accepted (CGA), OR,
- If some or all the content is not evidence-based or CGA,
- It must not appear to the COCPD to be dangerous or ineffective.
- In this case, content must:
- Offer a balanced explanation of potential benefits and risks, AND,
- Be presented in a manner that is intended to inform the physician rather than train the physician in the practical application of the content.
- Non-clinical topics must adhere to one or more of the following and eligibility must be evident within the learning objectives:
- Have a direct bearing on a physician’s ability to deliver patient care.
- Assist physicians in carrying out their professional responsibilities more effectively and efficiently.
- Directly support the profession of family medicine.
2. Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education
- Developing educational content that is fair, balanced, and free and independent of the influence of an ineligible company .
- Identifying, documenting, and resolving all individual relevant financial relationships with any ineligible companies.
- Appropriately managing commercial support in the design and development of the educational activity (if applicable).
- Developing educational content and related materials and format without commercial bias and marketing.
- Disclosure of all relevant individual financial relationships and disclosure of absence of relevant financial relationships.
- Disclosure of received commercial support.
- Appropriately managing and ensuring education is separate from any marketing by ineligible companies and nonaccredited education offered in conjunction with accredited continuing education.

3. Audit Requirements
- Retaining activity files for up to one year
- Demonstrating compliance with AAFP Credit System Eligibility Requirements including the ACCME Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education
The audit process is intended to be educational, not punitive. During the audit process, we’ll identify possible areas of improvement and provide feedback on how to improve processes for future activities, so that the CME activities align with our requirements. If your activity is selected for an audit, you will be notified via email.

4. Confidentiality Statement
The AAFP Credit System will maintain the confidentiality of CME provider organization information and will use and/or disclose it for the following purposes only:
- Activity certification and audit processes
- Facilitate CME reporting to regulatory authorities, specialty boards and other appropriate third parties (subject to confidentiality obligations being in place)
- De-identify and aggregate it with other de-identified CME providers’ information to share newsworthy data from time to time, e.g., annual reports on topic submissions
- As required by legal process
- Otherwise with the provider’s written permission
In addition, the AAFP reserves the right to use any information that is or may become publicly available.
